When this little guy ran in across the road in front of me, sailed over a fence and into the open field with his mother, my heart melted. He was enjoying the grass, but later he began to nurse from his mother. The cuteness overload nearly killed me on the spot. I kept wishing I would see a bull elk with impressive antlers, but when I saw mother and baby - well, I knew I was witnessing something very special.
According to the United States National Park Service, elk once roamed the southern Appalachian mountains and elsewhere in the eastern United States. They were eliminated from the region by over-hunting and loss of habitat. The last elk in North Carolina was believed to have been killed in the late 1700s. In Tennessee, the last elk was killed in the mid-1800s.
