This beautiful Golden Royal Poinciana was growing in Davie, Florida near Ft. Lauderdale. The Poinciana tree is more commonly covered in red flowers. This particular tree is a rarer variety with yellow flowers. This ornamental tree, which also provides much shade in hot climates, has many names. The scientific name, Delonix regia, is joined by royal poinciana, flame of the forest, flame tree and flamboyant as its common names. Poinciana is derived from the name "Phillippe de Longvilliers de Poincy", the governor of the island of St. Kitts in the 1600s. Although the tree originated in Madagasgar, it grows widely in tropical and sub-tropical climates throughout the world. In the United States, it is found in southern Texas and south/central Florida. However, it also is grown in the Bahamas, Spain, Israel, Cuba, many South American countries, Asia and Australia. Many of these countries have their own name for this tree, which stands out due to its striking, near solid covering of flowers during the summer months. In Myanmar, it is known as Sein-pann-ni. In India it is called May-flower tree, Gulmohar or Gul Mohr and Krishnachura. In Vietnam it is referred to as Phượng vỹ (Phoenix Tail) and also as the Pupil's Flower tree because it blooms at the end of the school year. Many places have associated themselves with this magnificent flowering tree. For example, it is the official tree of St. Kitts and Nevis. Also, a town in Puerto Rico, Penuelas, is known as "El Valle de los Flamboyanes" ("The Valley of the Poinciana Trees"). In Vietnam, the city of Hai Phong is also called "Thành phố hoa phượng đỏ" ("City of red poinciana"). In Taiwan, a university (National Cheng Kung University) has the gorgeous poinciana blossom as its emblem. It is understandable why so many places and peoples love the magnificent blossoms on the tree when it is in full bloom. Each petal measures roughly 3 inches long. Its leaves are feathery and fern-like. The overall effect is quite striking.
